As the inclusion of sex education in schools face criticism in several states, the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) has decided to launch `Life skills education' for school children.
Since some states were not happy to include `sex education' in their school syllabus, FPAI preferred to call it a `Life skills education' and advocated that such skill development were very important for having a healthy society, said FPAI secretary general VM Koliwad at a counselors' review meeting held here recently.
The FPAI advocacy campaign include - promoting girl child education, introducing life skills education in schools and improving quality of voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) centres apart from improving quality for abortion seekers in a semi-urban district, he said.
The four year advocacy programme which will be ending in 2009, was welcomed by all including parents, teachers and students, senior FPAI official Dr Seshagiri said.
He said that the states which are shying away from sex education syllabus should have a look at their programme to encourage such education which would benefit the students, especially the girls.
FPAI does not wait for tragedies to happen for advocacy but proactively tries to give some solution to prevent tragedies in the family, he said.
