And their lawyer, Nitin Rakshe, has said the police realised their mistake and did not mention Chhota Shakeel in the remand application.

“If they had been Shakeel gang members, the court would have not released them,” he added.

The police, in a press conference, had said that the duo are the members of gangster Chhota Shakeel’s gang and were out to kill a suburban-based businessman. They were arrested in Andheri (East) and two foreign made pistols were seized from them, the police had said.

Aslam who claims to be a businessman said the police did not arrest him and his friend from Andheri (E). “I had gone to attend a marriage at Reay Road with my family. As I was about to get into a taxi to return home, three policemen in civil clothes asked me to accompany them to Andheri police station,” said Aslam. “They did not even tell me the reason for my detention.”

The two alleged that the police had told them not to say anything against them in court or in front of the media. The duo claimed that they don’t have any criminal record. “The police were wrong in telling the media that the duo are Chhota Shakeel gang members, without any evidence,” said their lawyer, Nitin Rakshe.

Assistant Police Inspector Anand Bhoir, refuted the allegations. “We have concrete proof against them,” he said.
