SCHOOL STUDENTS may have to thank sportspersons if mathematics is made an optional subject. The CBSE has admitted a request from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to make maths optional from Class IX onwards.

SCHOOL STUDENTS may have to thank sportspersons if mathematics is made an optional subject. The CBSE has admitted a request from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to make maths optional from Class IX onwards.

“CBSE is not averse to the idea and has decided to look into it after consultation with the HRD Ministry,” said a source. In January, the ministry had forwarded a letter by Dr S.Y. Quraishi, secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, for the CBSE’s consideration.

Quraishi wanted the ministry to make maths optional as it consumed 90 per cent of students’ time, forcing them to give up sports and cultural activities.

“Then we bemoan that a country of a billion doesn’t win medals at the Olympics,” he had written.
