Freedom Circuit in the offing

THE STATE Tourism Department has hit on an idea of making a Freedom Circuit in the towns related to the freedom struggle. The department has decided to celebrate 2007 as the 150th anniversary of the country?s first freedom struggle that started in 1857.

THE STATE Tourism Department has hit on an idea of making a Freedom Circuit in the towns related to the freedom struggle. The department has decided to celebrate 2007 as the 150th anniversary of the country’s first freedom struggle that started in 1857.

Talking to HT here on Sunday, secretary of tourism Om Prakash said the the department sent a proposal of Rs 36 crore to the Centre to set up a Freedom Circuit.

According to the plan, the department would spend Rs 5.3 crore on restoration and renovation of Shaheed Smarak in Lucknow and Rs 14.50 crore on Victoria Park in Meerut, he said. “The department is also planning to construct a Sangram Sankul in the park,” he added. Besides, it would identify places and people associated with freedom in 36 districts, he said.

He further said that the department would install signages that would contain information about the place concerned. There would be an action plan to restore and renovate the buildings and places connected to 1857 freedom struggle, he added.

There were plans to hold various programmes in schools, colleges and universities in 2007, he said. He said there would pamphlets and posters on the life and contribution of the freedom fighters.
