In spite of its resemblance to Indian food, and the influx of Silicon Valley-returned techies, Tex-Mex food hasn’t gained popularity in Mumbai. Amigos is one of the few standalone places that serves this cuisine, although many eateries list the standard nachos and quesadillas. We walked into Amigos to find it filled with college kids, couples and the occasional yuppie. The decor is hip, with murals on the walls, al-fresco seating, thumping music (which didn’t go with the theme) and bartenders showing off their skills. After our friendly server welcomed us, we dived right in. We began our meal with classic appetisers — Caliente Chicken (Rs 145) and Lamb Chilli Taquitos (Rs 175). The chicken was very hot, coated with a creamy caliente sauce. We had to constantly sip on our water to get through the dish. The taquitos came toasted, which made them flaky and hard to bite. We’d have preferred plain tortillas.

However, the mildly spiced lamb filling more than made up for the crusty exterior. Both the appetiser portions were generous and we barely had room left for mains, but we soldiered on and ordered the Beef Barbacoa Burrito (Rs 245) and the Chipotle Prawns (Rs 395). We were told that prawns weren’t available so we switched the latter with the Chicken Mole Poblano (Rs 275)on recommendation.

For dessert, we wanted to try the Flan (Rs 105), but again it wasn’t available. We finally opted for the Coconut Tres Leche cake (Rs 125), which was served promptly. It was a thick slice of tres leche cake covered with a heavenly coconut icing. We wolfed it down in precisely four bites. It was definitely the highlight of the meal.
