A good circle of friends and neighbours, a happy disposition and a bulging bank account all contribute to a healthier and more active old age, according to a studying published Monday by the Hong Kong City University.

"Social network, lifestyle, financial security, humour and a positive outlook can help enhance positive ageing," said Ng Sik-hung, head of the college's applied social studies department, which carried out the survey.

"In particular, a good social network and a positive outlook were particularly powerful factors," Ng said.

The study found that most people aged in stages, with critical deterioration at 55, 65 and 75. It also found that women aged quicker than men.

Many old people who felt younger than their advanced years did so because of their lifestyle and circle of friends, it concluded.

"Some people age better than others because they are more financially secure, have more support from family and friends, and have a more positive life-style," a university statement said.
