As rains continued to elude north Bengal, residents of a village in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district arranged the marriage of a pair of frogs, as they believe that this is the way to invoke Lord Varuna, the rain god.

The wedding of the pair of gold line frogs - named appropriately 'Akash' (sky) and 'Bristi' (rain) was held at Bankpara village under Haldibari block on Saturday night amidst all traditional rituals.
After the marriage, the bride and groom were released in a dry pond nearby and a feast hosted for 500 guests.
Local Forward Bloc leader Ranibala Roy was present at the function and even took part in the group dance that followed.
She lamented that she had failed to arrange irrigation facilities for the villagers.
A banyan and a fig tree were wedded in the first week of this month in a village under Kushmondi block of South Dinajpur district for the same purpose.
