From goodness to godliness

The purpose of life is to be good and useful. Only goodness leads to godliness. As Belgian essayist Maurice Maeterlinck says, an act of goodness is an act of happiness. That is why it is said if you are good to yourself, you are good to the rest of the world as well. But you have to be good to others to be good to yourself.

Ajit Kumar Bishnoi's book, 'Spiritual Sense --- The Truths' is essentially themed on this point of view. It deals with topics that one has to keep in mind and practise as a habit in order to attain godliness.

Bishnoi interprets goodness as a combination of several traits – high quality, pleasant, sensible, skilful, morally right, kind, useful, helpful and sensible.

The Bhagavad Gita says, goodness is essentially “illuminating and free from diseases on account of purity.”

It is goodness that keeps one in the happiest mood. It is being in a state of mind always positive, helpful, mindful and progressive.

Human nature is the combination of goodness, passion and darkness. Goodness comes after overpowering passion and darkness by following a highly disciplined life.

And remember, goodness, as Lord Krishna said, “binds with happiness and knowledge.” I would say when there is knowledge (awareness), happiness comes as its fruit in abundance. As human beings, endowed with the gift of intelligence, we have to strive for such a state of mind that is the key to freedom from all miseries and the vicissitudes of life. Goodness alone gives such sense and sensibility.
