Addressing a press conference at a City hotel today, Group members nephrologist Dr Rajesh Bharani and urologist Dr Pankaj Maheshwari said that the proverb ‘prevention is better than cure’ is the right option for any health related problem.

The fast changing social conditions have adversely affected the quality of life and people have become more susceptible to ailments like blood pressure and diabetes.

Out of all the cases referred for treatment 10 percent pertained to renal problems and though on account of treatment becoming more sophisticated the mortality rate had come down they still weighed heavily in terms of morbidity.

World Kidney Day would be marked by the release of a book ‘Introduction to Kidneys’ authored by both the doctors. Mahatma Gandhi Medical College (MGM) Dean Dr VK Saini and Indian Medical Association (IMA) president Dr Arun Agarwal would release the book in the august presence of Rashtra Sant Bhaiyyu Maharaj AKA Udai Singh Deshmukh.

A help line and website would be started soon. Addressing another press conference today, kidney specialist Dr Naresh Pahwa said that according to the reputed Medical Journal Kidney International the disease was growing at a rate of 10 percent in the world.

As per the findings of a recent survey, out of every 10 lakh Indians 7,852 are suffering from one or the other kind of renal ailment.

Kidneys could be damaged due to acute renal failure caused from dehydration or reaction from medicines or through chronic kidney diseases stemming from diabetes, high blood pressure, stones, prostrate enlargement ad other hereditary diseases.
Dialysis and kidney transplantation are the only effective answers to this disease and with each incurring a monthly
expenditure of about Rs 8,000 is beyond the reach of many people, he said.
