1 Keep a check: Prevention is always better than cure. Make periodical inspections of furniture for lifting moldings and veneer (which will sound hollow when lightly tapped), loose joints and water damage.

2 Position wise: Furniture should be positioned at least two feet away from any heat source. Room heaters, which are used during winters, must be placed at a safe distance to prevent the furniture from getting dark.

3 Special care of upholstery: Cushions and fabrics can either be machine washed or hand washed. Use warm water and never use them or stack them up until they are completely dry. If you stack them up in a wet or dirty state, mold and mildew can grow on them.

4 For soft wood: Soft wood furniture that is made from pine or cedar must always be placed indoors or at least covered. The cold can cause cracks in them. The best way to keep moisture completely away from furniture is to cover it with a thin polythene wrap during the night to prevent dew drops from seeping into the wood.
