Japanese Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura briefed UN General Assembly President Jean Ping last evening on the discussions G4 comprising India, Brazil, Germany and Japan had with foreign ministers in London.

Later he told reporters that G4 plans to have a vote on the resolution by this month end would have to be given up if African Union decides to have a summit on August 4.

"We are trying to get to the vote as quickly as possible. We will have to know what is the outcome of the African Summit," German UN Ambassador Gunter Pleuger told reporters.

However, a vote in September prior to summit of world leaders at the United Nations, scheduled for September 14-16, would be "too late," he added.

The G-4 members met with cosponsors yesterday to explain the changes made in the draft in the light of discussions they had with AU.

The reaction of the cosponsors was not immediately available.
