Gang rape accused attempts suicide

An 18-year-old prisoner, facing rape charges, attempted suicide on Monday by consuming phenyl, said a doctor.

Deepak Panday, who was admitted to Bhagwati Hospital, was stable, doctor MR Bhole said. Panday had been arrested by the Samta Nagar police on Saturday along with his three friends for allegedly raping a 17-year-old Kandivli resident and blackmailing her.

Panday’s father, Gautam, said that one of his relatives informed him that Deepak was admitted in the hospital since Monday. “One of my relatives went to Bhagwati Hospital to see a patient and saw Deepak in the second floor ward. The police did not even inform us about the incident,” Gautam said. He added that they were going to the hospital to find out why is he had been admitted. “If he is consumed phenyl we will find out from how he got the substance in police custody,” said Gautam.

Bapu Shivram Bandalkar, investigating officer of the case, said Panday who wanted to evade police questioning went to the toilet on Monday afternoon. He found the pheynl kept there and consumed it, “Panday is now stable and will be discharged on Wednesday. We have registered a case of attempt to suicide against him.”
