The police arrested Paaygun Bhosale, 24, Samsher Bhosale, 28, Vilas Bhosale, 23, Pravin Kale, 22, Alamchandra Kale, 27, on Wednesday and recovered Rs 22,000 from them. A total of Rs 2.50 lakh had been robbed by the accused.

A boy had died while three others were injured in the incident. “People were disturbed because of the robberies that have taken place in the last three months. Twice there had been protests by the residents by blocking the Murbad-Ahmednagar National highway,” said deputy superintendent of police Mitesh Ghatte.

The police had formed six teams to trace the gang. On Wednesday, when they got a tip-off, they laid a trap and arrested five of them from Karjat district. Two are still absconding.

Explaining their modus operandi, Ghatte said, the gang used to visit their target village during the daytime. Later in the night, when the villagers were asleep, they used to enter their house, threatened them with a steel rod and wooden sticks, and rob them of their belongings.
