The prosecution said that Parab shot at Hansraj Shah, who was a witness in a case of intimidation, inside the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate's court on June six, 1984.

The incident occured at around 2:10 pm in the presence of the magistrate, the public prosecutor, lawyers and litigants.

Shah, a trader from Kanjurmarg area of the city, was injured but survived the attack.

The police accompanying him opened fire, injuring Parab in the chest. He was arrested on the spot.

Abdul Rauf Shaikh, one of the policemen who had fired at Parab, was injured in the cross-fire, but, in the course of the trial, it was proved that he was hit by a bullet fired by another police officer.

Parab after being released on bail fled to Dubai. In 2003, he was deported by authorities there and was re-arrested by the Mumbai police.

He was charged with attempt to murder. Additional Sessions Judge SP Dawre, while convicting Parab, relied on four eyewitnesses who indicted him.
