The injured constables were taken to a near by hospital and operated upon. “They are out of danger,” said the doctor attending on them.

Police said the Ajay Jadeja gang, which was gunning for Bhura to avenge the murder of Jadeja’s guru Dharma, is suspected to be behind the shootout.

The dead included Ravinder Bhura, his nephew Gaurav Choudhary alias ‘Guddu’ and Rajinder alias ‘Churmuta’ (shooter of Jadeja gang) and constable Manoj Kumar.

The incident took place at around 1.15 pm in front of Terah Courts. Police brought Ravindra Bhura in court number 3 for hearing in a loot case. The moment Bhura stepped out of the police van, unidentified assailants waiting outside the court opened fire at him. Cops on security duty also returned fire but the assailants managed to escape. “The shootout continued for more than 20 minutes and more than 50 rounds of bullets were fired,” anticipated Ravikant Bhardwaj, secretary of Meerut Bar Association.
