Domino’s
It took American entrepreneur Tom Monaghan five years to re-christen his pizza parlour from Dominick’s to Domino’s. The chain, now synonymous in India with the 30-minute delivery promise, is spread across 55 countries, with over 8,500 stores and a net worth of about $5.1 billion.
Domino’s came to India in 1996, 36 years after the first store was established in the US. Over 12 years, the chain’s main franchisee here set up a network of 190 stores, making Domino’s the market leader in the organised pizza home delivery segment, with a share of 65 per cent of the market. “The market has been growing at about 30 per cent, while we have been growing at 55 per cent,” said Dev Amritesh, vice president of marketing, Domino’s Pizza India.
Pizza Hut
Pizza Hut is the world’s largest pizza chain, with 12, 500 restaurants across 91 countries. But it began as a little diner in 1958 set up by Dan and Frank Carney, who took a family pizza recipe and started retailing it in Wichita, Kansas. In the face of competition, the brothers decided to stick to the casual dining format. Pizza Hut came to India with a restaurant in Bangalore in June 1996.
The company enjoys a 27 per cent market share of India’s Rs 1,000 crore branded eating-out market, and has 35 outlets across the country. “We’re a casual dining restaurant chain, so we see no real competition in our segment,” said Anup Jain, Pizza Hut India’s marketing director.
