HIGH PRECISION instruments and sensitive radars will very soon be installed by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) at the first geomagnetic observatory of the state being set up at Jhusi in Allahabad.
The observatory named after renowned scientist associated with Allahabad University and former Director of National Physical Laboratory Dr KS Krishnan is likely to be inaugurated in December this year.
"The observatory being set up by Indian Institute of Geomagnetism with its headquarters in Mumbai to observe the changes in the magnetic properties of the earth. Prof Alok Krishna Gupta, Director of Allahabad University's National Centre of Experimental Mineralogy and Petrology has been unofficially authorised to monitor the development of the observatory", said a reliable source.
"High precision instruments and very sensitive radars will be installed to record the changes in the earth's atmosphere.
The earth's magnetic properties change according to the sunlight and vary according to the position of the sun throughout the day.
The gaseous envelope (atmosphere) when comes in contact with solar rays gets heated. These charged particles of the atmosphere get ionised and develop electric current thereby intensifying the magnetic activity of earth by afternoon.

{{/usCountry}}The magnetic changes inside the earth's surface also vary and are different at different depth. The observatory will carry out research in the high temperature and pressure laboratory to observe the electric conductivity at different levels of earth viz earth's crust, mantle and core.
The observatory is being set up in around 35 acres of land in Kanihar village of Jhusi and infrastructure is being developed according to the requirements of the observatory.
The sources said that the main administrative building has been constructed and construction of guest house and staff quarters is undergoing under the supervision of VH Dawalappa. The observatory will bring renowned scientists to Allahabad who will carry out research works on the data continuously received through the radars.
