According to the online betting site betandwin, Germany are now listed as 8/1 to claim the World Cup on home soil, behind reigning champions and favourites Brazil at 4/1.

England have slipped to third favourties at 8.5/1, just ahead of Italy and Argentina at 9/1 and 10/1 respectively.

Rooney's chances of playing in his first World Cup were dealt a severe blow when he fractured a metatarsal bone in his right foot during United's 3-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday and it will be at least six weeks before he can play again, effectively ruling him out of at least the opening stages in Germany.

But the 20-year-old is determined to play as big a role in the tournament as possible despite the scepticism of his Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson.

Rooney will have a fresh scan on Wednesday to assess the extent of the damage to his metatarsal.
