According to the OECD-Report Bildung auf einen Blick (Education at a Glance), in 2002 Germany ranked second in the category of “Destination countries for internationally mobile students” along with the United Kingdom.
Of the 1.9 million international students, Germany and the UK accounted for 12 per cent each. The report threw up another interesting statistic: The number of Asian students in German institutes had increased by three per cent.
Hot for what?
It’s popular for Engineering. Moreover, says Ulrich Podewils, Director, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), New Delhi, “Cogent solutions have been found for both the problem of staying on after completing a course and the language barrier. Students are now permitted to stay put in Germany for up to 12 months after completing a degree programme and look for a job. Once they find suitable employment, their study visa is converted into a work visa.”

When to apply: As per university application deadlines.
How to apply: There are two ways in which to gain entry into a German university -- directly apply to the university of your choice or send your application through a consortium known as ASSIST (www.uni-assist.de) for admission to its member universities.
At present, ASSIST has 80 universities as its members. However, note that ASSIST members will accept your application only if they are sent via the umbrella organisation. Direct applications will not be accepted.
