A girl tells local TV channels that her brother is trying to sell her off. She says that he might even kill her. Her fears come true: within the next hour, the brother puts a knife through her, killing her instantly.

Priya, 18, of Rahul Vihar in Ghaziabad, was allegedly killed by her elder brother Naresh on Tuesday. Talking to the media less than an hour before her murder, she had alleged that her brother and another woman were trying to sell her off. “They were just trying to marry me off to someone in Aligarh. But I know money changed hands,” she had told the reporters.

Later, Priya’s younger brother Mohit said that he had gone to the police station twice early in the day seeking protection for his sister. “No one at Vijay Nagar police station took me seriously. They told me to go home,” Mohit said.

SSP Deepak Ratan, however, rejected the charge. “Her brother never came to the police station. The girl’s mother’s statement says that no reporter had spoken to the girl on Tuesday,” he said. He added that the girl might have talked to the Press some days ago.
