With World Environment Day just around the corner (June 5), here’s your chance to do your bit for the environment. United Way of Mumbai, in association with a few corporates, has organised a clean-up drive today, along the city’s two most prominent beaches - Girgaum and Juhu Chowpatty. The drives will see more than 500 volunteers educate Mumbaikars about the importance of keeping the city’s beaches clean. Though anyone can be a part of this initiative, prior registration is a must for participation.
“The idea is to get the volunteers to interact with beachgoers and raise awareness about keeping the coastline clean. They will also pick up litter that has been thrown on the beaches,” says Ajay Govale of United Way of Mumbai. Those beachgoers who take more interest in the clean-up drive will be given a band that says ‘keep the city clean’.
Also, since the United Way of Mumbai has partnered with Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) on its Clean-up Mumbai Campaign, it is authorised to create part-time citizen clean-up marshals. And, at the drives, forms will be available for citizens to sign up and aid the MCGM in keeping the city clean. The new marshals will also be issued warning clean-up cards that will help them bring offenders to task.
Apart from that, there will also be a signature campaign on both beaches. Here, beachgoers will pledge to use dustbins while on those beaches. “Street plays will also be performed to capture the audience’s attention and drive home the cleanliness message,” says Govale. At the end of the day, the volunteers will hand over mobile bins to the beach officials.
