Unable to bear the stink any longer, some of the residents of luxury housing enclaves near the garbage dump have moved out. Budgets permitting, many others would like to follow.
“Many of the affluent people, who could afford to purchase houses at better locations elsewhere in the city, have moved
out of this place just because of the stink,” says Jaipal Gulia, a resident.
Dr Bhawana Popat, who runs a clinic near the dump, says many of her regular patients, who happen to be women, have stopped visiting her clinic because of the stink.
“The administration has failed to prevent the dumping of garbage here, and the entire neighbourhood smells horribly,” she says.
Gulia says the volume of garbage being dumped nowadays is much less than six months ago, when both Haryana Urban Development Authority and Gurgaon Municipal Corporation used the site to dump solid waste. “But it continues to stink,” he adds.
The residents claim a number of dairy owners, who have considerable political clout, are also responsible for the foul smell. “Some of the dairy owners continue to use the site for dumping cowdung and even their dead animals here. Nobody from the administration ever stops them,” alleges Pankaj Verma, a resident.
