The law and order situation in Assam’s Golaghat district improved on Friday and, as a result, the indefinite curfew was lifted for 12 hours (6 am to 6 pm). The area had witnessed series of police–public clashes on Wednesday.

Assam police additional DG (law and order) AP Raut said that there were no untoward incidents reported on Friday.

Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi announced that the state would entrust the case to the CBI for a thorough probe into the recent incidents along the Assam-Nagaland border in the wake of kidnapping of two youth allegedly by Naga miscreants on June 26 and its aftermath.

On August 12, Naga miscreants attacked Assam villages along the Nagaland border. Nine people were killed and 12 villages gutted. In police firing at Arengapara on August 20, two people died on the spot in police firing while another succumbed later.

Gogoi also said that the state government would provide adequate compensation to the displaced people.
