The S-I reportedly wanted assurance that he would not be terminated from service. Since senior cops have yet to assure the S-I, he was not turning up before them.

Meanwhile, cops hope that police teams camping in Gorakhpur would recover the remaining gold from an associate of another S-I Brijraj Yadav. Yadav is in Lucknow police custody since Monday.

A senior police official supervising the investigation said they were trying to recover maximum possible looted gold before sending the accused policemen to jail. Reason: Once the accused are jailed it would be difficult to recover the booty. They expect to retrieve one more kg of gold from Gorakhpur by Thursday morning, the cop revealed.

Sources in the police revealed, ever since his name cropped up, absconding S-I Santosh Singh was in regular touch with some cops of the Lucknow crime branch. The crime branch sleuths are on the job to coerce Santosh to surrender before the senior cops or he would land in more trouble.

An additional SP rank official even talked to the accused on phone and asked him to either come to him or else he would be expelled from services if he delayed the surrender.

Two police teams — one each from the crime branch and another from Aashiana police station — were conducting searches at various places in Gorakhpur and Deoria for the booty. The search was on following revelation made by S-I Brijraj Yadav during interrogation.

A top official revealed the accused were likely to be produced before the court on Thursday and the investigating team was likely to recover the looted four kg gold the same day.
