Emerging from an over three-hour meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security held on Friday evening, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said he was hopeful that the issue would be resolved amicably.

"(Finance minister P) Chidambaram and I were there and we reported to the Prime Minister about the progress," Mukherjee said when asked whether the issue figured during the discussions at the meeting.

"I will see the papers (the report) and send them by tomorrow morning (to the Prime Minister)," he said.

Asked whether progress had been made in finding a solution, he said, "I am always hopeful that the issue will be resolved amicably but till it is done, how can I say".

Mukherjee earlier indicated that a formula was being worked out to increase the number of seats as also institutions to ensure that the general category remained unaffected while implementing the quota.
