Chilean ninth seed Fernando Gonzalez ousted Russian Marat Safin to advance to the second round of the French Open on Tuesday.

Gonzalez came through 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 winner over the former Australian and US Open champion to set up a meeting with Serbian teenager Novak Djokovic for a place in the third round.
