Known for its colourful dressing and dance numbers, Bollywood, of late, is experimenting with the Gothic look. For the first time ever, an out-n-out Gothic video has been shot for the Kareena Kapoor-Saif Ali Khan starrer Kurbaan. Katrina Kaif was seen sporting dreadlocks, tattoos, black nails and pierced chin in Blue. Three fashion and lifestyle glossies recently also had actresses Kajol, Kareena and Minissha Lamba going Goth for their covers.

Choreographers Bosco and Caesar conceptualised a Goth theme for Kurbaan. Says Bosco Martis, “Director Renzil D’Silva, didn’t want to use lot of film visuals in the promotional video. So we thought of painting emotions of pain and betrayal in a stark way. Our gothic experiment worked well and we are getting compliments.” The female in the song is wearing black nails, cheeks marked with bleeding kohl, a burning rose, an evil spirit hovering around with Saif’s head covered in a black hooded jacket.

Designer Aki Narula, who did styling for the entire crew of Kurbaan, says, “I was really excited while discussing the picturisation of the song. We wanted to show the dark side of sacrifice and hence such a look fitted perfectly.”

“College goers do dress up with dark lipsticks, piercings and tattoos,” says designer Nitin Bal Chauhan. “But it’s a cult to which India has to still wake up,” adds Chauhan who has been drawing inspiration from the Victorian period for Gothic. “I have seen some very rich costumes,” he says.

Designers Falguni and Shane, does Goth too. “My label Spendthrift is about how gothic can be a part of everyday wear,” says Falguni.
