The Puducherry government will zealously implement the Right to Education Act brought in by the Centre, Chief Minister V Vaithilingam said in Puducherry on Thursday.
Replying to views of members at the end of a debate on various departments, including Education, in the assembly, he said a special enumeration of children who have either dropped out of schools midway or had never been to schools will be carried out and they will be enrolled in schools.
He said around Rs 3.5 crore was earmarked to provide infrastructure in schools including sufficient classrooms, toilets and compound walls under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA -Education for all) scheme in the Union Territory.
Classrooms in government higher secondary schools will also be constructed under the scheme at an outlay of Rs 5.58 crore, he said.
A drive to achieve the goal of 100 per cent literacy will be launched this year under the Kamaraj Literacy Movement.
Differently-abled children will be taken care of and schemes involving an investment of Rs 89 lakh will be implemented to promote their welfare under the SSA scheme.
To encourage computer based education in schools, the government drew up plans to invest Rs 2 crore for this innovative programme. For educational facilities of Scheduled Caste students and girls, a special scheme at an outlay of Rs 1.5 crore will be implemented.]
