The month-long standoff between the government and Indian Institute of Technology faculty over pay structure ended with Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal saying the IITs could relax these norms.
Sibal, who met faculty members on Friday, told them the pay notification issued by the ministry would act as a guideline and the Board of Governors of each IIT had the freedom to tweak it if necessary.
“The IIT system has the flexibility to deviate from the norms in exceptional cases,” Sibal said. “All issues over pay structure have been resolved.”
He also said future decisions on pay and other such issues would be taken only after consulting faculty members.
The IIT response was cautious. “The minister has assured us the directors and Board of Governors can change pay structure norms when necessary. Things will be clearer after our meeting with the IIT directors tomorrow,” said M. Thenmozhi, president, All India IIT Faculty Federation.
Around 1,500 teachers had gone on hunger strike on September 24 to demand withdrawal of some provisions in the notification — such as 40 per cent cap on promotion of professors to senior grade, contractual appointment at entry level.
