Highly placed sources in the government said the proposal being shepherded by the Home Ministry recognises the need to take some steps to deal with the menace in a number of states.

The sources said there is a view that greater and larger quantum of force should be used against the naxalites.

The sources said Home Minister P Chidambaram is on record to say that government may have to use Special Forces in the fight against Maoists.

A special committee in this regard will take a decision, they said.

The idea is what should be the strategy and the need decide on the quantum of forces, the sources said.

On the arrest of a top Maoist leader Khobad Ghandy, a Doon-school educated London-trained Chartered Accountant, in Delhi, the sources said some decades back there used to be some sympathy and support for Left extremist ideology which has now waned among intelligentsia, NGOs and activists.
