The Delhi Cabinet passed the proposal to make the code mandatory for government constructions on Monday.

“Adhering to the code would ensure that the energy consumption by new government buildings or complexes is brought down by 25 to 40 per cent,” Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.

While the code does not apply to private constructions, Dikshit said the government would incorporate a mechanism to see the it is implemented by local bodies, municipalities, government-aided institutions, government schools, boards and other autonomous bodies of the city government.

The government would establish an effective mechanism for implementation by integrating the ECBC in the building bye-laws and specification of such electrical and electronic procurement in the relevant manuals by the concerned agencies and local bodies, so as to include them in the government tenders.
