Appalled by the plight of Urdu and Urdu teachers in government sponsored Urdu medium schools, the Delhi High Court has sought an explanation from the Delhi government. In response to a writ petition filed by an NGO Siksha Sewa Samiti, the court while issuing notices to the government asked them to file a reply by May 21.
The petition has alleged that cause of a “partisan, biased and indifferent” attitude of the government towards the language; the number of Urdu medium schools has come down from about 150 to merely 22.
Mushtaq Ahmad, counsel for the petitioners also claimed that since 1995 the government has not appointed any Urdu teacher in any of its schools despite a large number of sanctioned posts lying vacant.
“In case of appointment of a teacher or principal in a minority institution, the government demands approval by it and in case of non-approval, threatens to stop grant. Even in cases of disciplinary actions it demands its approval”, the petition alleged.
The NGO further claimed that the government has mischievously deputed a large number of non-Urdu teachers in the Urdu mediums schools resulting in either closure of these schools or their merger with other schools.
Citing numerous examples the petitioner claimed that majority of the Urdu medium schools have principals, who do not know Urdu.
