Rejecting charges of shielding those involved in the recent attack on a professor in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday said the state police was going into the matter and ruled out a CBI probe.

"There is no truth in the allegation that we are trying to shield anyone. The government is conducting a thorough probe and whosoever is found guilty will not be spared at any cost," Chouhan told a private news channel.

He said the government was looking closely into the matter, but added that so far nobody has come forth as a witness in the case and it was still not clear who the attackers were.

The Chief Minister, however, rejected reports of an eyewitness in the case being beaten up. "There is no truth in it," he said.

A peon of Madhav College, where Prof HS Sabharwal was attacked by a group of unruly students after he cancelled students' union polls following complaints of irregularities, on Wednesday told reporters he was an eyewitness to the incident. He is in hospital after he was beaten up.
