After hectic parleys following differences over its wording, Government and an agitated Opposition on Tuesday agreed on a resolution deploring US-led war on Iraq and sought immediate cessation of hostilities and withdrawal of coalition forces.
The unanimous resolution, read out by Speaker Manohar Joshi, hoped Iraq's sovereignty would be kept intact and its reconstruction carried out under the supervision of the United Nations.
"This House deplores the attack by the coalition forces led by United States against sovereign Iraq", the resolution said "expressing national sentiments."
"Change of regime in Iraq through military action is unacceptable," the resolution said.
The trauma suffered by the innocent people of Iraq, particularly women and children, following the war was a serious humanitarian problem, it said adding "this action is without the approval of the UN Security Council and against the UN charter."
"This House, therefore, expresses deep sorrow and sympathy for the people of Iraq," it said.
"This House calls for forthwith cessation of hostilities and demands quick withdrawal of coalition forces from Iraq," the resolution, in Hindi, said.
"This House also demands that the UN ensures that Iraq's sovereignty remains intact and its reconstruction is carried out under UN supervision," it said.

{{/usCountry}}Following humanitarian appeal by the UN, India has decided to give Rs.100 crore assistance including 50,000 mt of wheat to the world body for the war-ravaged people, the resolution said, hoping that more help would be extended when needed.
