The Maharashtra government is likely to appeal in the Bombay High Court seeking life imprisonment for a former police constable Sunil More.
More was found guilty of raping a minor girl in a police chowki last year.
The sessions court on Monday awarded 12 years rigorous imprisonment to Sunil More instead of life imprisonment sought by the prosecution.
Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said More had committed a serious offence and therefore he had asked the court to award deterrent punishment to him under IPC which prescribes life sentence as the maximum penal action.
Nikam said after the verdict that he had recommended to the state government to file an appeal in the high court to seek enhancement of punishment awarded to More.
Prosecutor Nikam argued for life imprisonment saying More had committed a serious crime by taking law into his hands and bringing a blot on the police force.
The trial court did not agree with the prosecutor and imposed 12 years RI sentence on the convict.
Constable Sunil More was charged with raping a 17-year-old girl in the Marine Drive police chowki located barely a ten-minute walk from Mantralaya, the state secretariat, on April 21 last year.
