TO IMPROVE health facilities in rural areas and to provide better medical care to the villagers, the health department had decided to appoint 134 specialist doctors on contract. “All the doctors appointed on contract will be deputed at the health centres and hospitals located in far-flung areas”, said health department officials.
But contrary to the earlier decision, the health department has now decided to depute the doctors at the district hospitals located in cities.
The department has decided to appoint 17 neuro- surgeons, 19 urology surgeons, one chest surgeon, 23 plastic surgeons, 19 neuro physicians, 19 nephrologists, 19 gastro physicians and 17 psychiatrists.
A health department officer said the specialist doctors appointed on contract would be placed in Balrampur Hospital, RML Hospital and SPM Hospital in Lucknow, UHM Hospital in Kanpur, Opec Hospital in Basti, district hospitals in Varanasi, Mirzapur, Allahabad, Azamgarh, Gorakhpur, Faizabad, Gonda, Jhansi, Agra, Meerut, Bareilly, Moradabad and Saharanpur.
Reacting to the decision of the health department, the office-bearers of the Provincial Medical Services Association (PMSA) said on the one hand the department decided to appoint level one and two doctors at community health centres and primary health centres and on the other, it decided to depute doctors appointed on contract at district hospitals.
There was hardly any difference in the qualifications of both the categories of doctors. Even the promotions of level one and two government doctors had been pending since after promotion the majority of them would be appointed to the district hospitals. The appointment of the doctors on contract might pave the way for malpractices in the government hospitals, since the doctors appointed on contract would be on duty without any responsibility, they said.Meanwhile ,the relay hunger strike of the PMSA continued on the third day today. General secretary of the association Dr Jai Singh said the PMSA would continue its agitation till the fulfillment of its demands.
