The Bombay High Court on Thursday gave the Maharashtra government two months to put in place security apparatus like closed circuit TVs, a monitoring room and police posts at the court complex in Mumbai.

The order, passed by a division bench of Justices RM Lodha and SA Bobde, came in response to a PIL filed by Gurucharang Singh Chauhan, president of the NGO Security Association of India.

At the last hearing, the court had given the government two weeks to complete the task. But the government pleader on Thursday said the time was inadequate as installing closed circuit TVs involved laying an elaborate electrical network. Also, trained personnel are needed to monitor the CCTV images, he said.

The government has sanctioned Rs 55 lakh for upgrading security at the important building, he said.

The court ordered that the assistant commissioner of police (security and protection) should visit the court complex every day for a period of two weeks and ensure that security there was adequate. The officer will have to submit a daily report to the court's Registrar General.
