Speaking to HT, minister of state for rural development Upendra Kushwaha on Tuesday said it is important that the changes in the bill are done as early as possible.

“There are many problems in the Land Bill 2013 brought in by the UPA and we want to address them urgently and therefore in all likelihood we will introduce amendments in the coming session of the Parliament,” he said.

The Act is widely seen as favouring landowners and peasants, and the possible changes in some of its contentious provisions will be a step in assuaging the concerns of industry — which has complained that it jeopardises development and industrialisation process.

The revisions, if they go ahead, will also mark the most visible manifestation of ‘change’, a key campaign promise.
