Nikhil is an undergraduate student of commerce at a local college. Police said he and his friends Manjunath, 22, and Sayeed, 22, ordered biriyani at the Empire Hotel restaurant on Church Street. The staff refused to take their order, saying the kitchen was closed. There was an exchange of words followed by fisticuffs. The three youths smashed glass panes and furniture before taking their complaint to the Cubbon Park police.

Nikhil’s complaint said the hotel staff beat him after an argument. He alleged his car was damaged. A constable took the three to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Police Commissioner Neelam Achyut Rao said the hotel staff too filed a complaint of assault. Their complaint did not name Nikhil or his friends but is against “unknown people”.

Rao said Additional Commissioner (Law and Order) Bipin Gopalkrishna and Deputy Commissioner (central) G.B. Chebbi will investigate the complaints. He assured the media the “investigation will be impartial. There is no pressure from the CM”.
At the hospital, Nikhil gave an address different from Kumaraswamy’s official residence.
