Gloating about a 99.6 per cent score may no longer be possible for students who appear for their Class X exams in 2007. CBSE has decided to bring about a nine-point grading system for Classes IX and X.
The system will come into force from the new session starting in April 2006. This will also mark the beginning of a differential grading system under which varying models will be used for different subjects.
“For instance, if we are marking a mathematics paper, scoring between 94-100 marks may fetch a student an A star grade. But for a social science paper, any student scoring between 86-100 marks will get the top grade.
But the whole concept of rating children on the basis of decimal marks whereby a student who has scored 99.5 is considered superior to one who has scored 99.3 will be rooted out,” said CBSE Chairperson Ashok Ganguly.
The board has also decided to introduce a seven-point grading system for the middle school (for Classes VI-VIII).
