R&B singer John Legend won the Grammy Award for best new artist on Wednesday, a prize that most pundits had expected would go his way.
Legend, whose real name is John Stephens, shared the lead among Grammy nominees with Mariah Carey and Kanye West, all landing eight nominations. He earlier won two awards.
The other contenders were the bands Fall Out Boy, Keane, and Sugarland, and R&B singer Ciara.
