The four robbers, who were arrested by the south district police after an encounter in the crowded Green Park area of south Delhi, were planning to rob a house a few blocks away.
On Sunday, they had unsuccessfully tried to rob a van of the Afghanistan Embassy. Hindustan Times visited the N Block building, which, the police said, was the robbers’ target.
Usha Jolly (57), a first floor resident, said they had no security guards and their gate used to remain open. “We thought the guards posted at the colony gates were enough. We will be more cautious now,” said Jolly.
The owner of Focus MRI Centre, opposite which the encounter took place, lives on the second floor of the building.
“The diagnostic centre’s owner Prashant Sareen lives on the second floor, and it is possible that the robbers were targeting his house,” said a police officer.
The encounter
“There was incessant firing from inside the car. The police also retaliated and more than 30 rounds of gunfire were exchanged. The policemen were armed with AK-47 rifles and the accused were carrying sophisticated weapons and a dagger,” said a police officer.
Besides Satte, the three others identified as Shakeel, Nadeem and Kuldeep Singh alias Sonu were injured. Three policemen were also injured. Two others, later identified as Nadir and Harpal fled towards Hauz Khas in a white Santro car. They later surrendered before a television channel and were arrested.
