Grid failure trips NCR into darkness

Many parts of the Capital and its adjoining towns of Gurgaon, Noida and Ghaziabad plunged into darkness after the Northern Grid tripped at 3.02 am following a fog-induced technical snag in transmission lines that reduced power to zero at many substations.

Areas like Rithala, Shalimar Bagh and many localities in North Delhi went without power for the better part of Saturday.

Around 35 lines of the Northern Grid tripped due to fog, said a Delhi Transco spokesperson.

In Gurgaon, a major breakdown at a 220 KVA feeder crippled power supply to many areas for over five hours. “Power supply failed at 2.30 am and was restored at 8.30 am. There were frequent power cuts during the day forcing us to start generators,” said Kitto Mathur of Ridgewood Estate Condominium residents welfare association. “This not only adds to the air pollution, but the cost of power consumption also goes up for the residents.”

Long-drawn outages of up to 10 hours were also reported from Ghaziabad. Supply to residential areas was badly hit.
