There is little point in a political visit that has no impact except to provide media coverage (Sonia visit to give Cong a leg-up, January 11). Sonia Gandhi’s visit to Orissa’s Kalinga Nagar must be seen to be of import — reflected in the sincerity with which investigations are undertaken. Relief to the victims should also be a sustained effort and not merely tokenism, only for publicity in front of a national leader.

Sonia Gandhi in her speech at Kalinga Nagar said that the Congress, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and she herself have been fighting for the cause of tribals. If this is true, then how is it that the tribals in Orissa face such trying circumstances? Orissa’s poor have made it to the news often whether it be the poorest of poor mothers selling babies or communities starving to death. How long will the Congress leadership take to ameliorate the sufferings of the poor tribals of this country?

Censor the censor
This refers to the editorial One flies over the censor’s nest (January 12). The brouhaha raised by the IAF and the drama by the Censor Board for a review by the defence authorities of the film Rang De Basanti is unfortunate.
The Board should draw a line of demarcation between reel life and real life situations. The Censor needs to poke its nose only on the issue of obscenity in films.

Cricket rites
Kudos to the court for letting better sense prevail and disallowing Doordarshan to overpower Ten Sports. It is sad that Prasar Bharati is not ready to pay Rs 25 crore. When will Doordarshan be free of myopic governance?

Minority communities?
It is ridiculous to call Muslims and Christians minorities in India as these communities are part and parcel of the country. Minority communities cannot be defined by religion. By ‘minority’ should be meant migrants and communities whose continuance may be demographically threatened.
