Gudda's show glitzy but jarring

Rohit Bal says he doesn?t create clothes to impress anyone, not even buyers.

From Manish Malhotra to JJ Valaya and from item gal Parmeeta Katkar to ramp scorcher Indrani Dasgupta, one could see a long list of celebrities at Gudda aka Rohit Bal’s show on the first day of fashion week in the capital.

‘A vintage in autumn’ is what the Delhi-based designer’s theme was all about. The collection was not at all overtly done like last year (where one saw models in just bare minimum beaded attire). It was all about grandeur and style this time around.

This time, the collection had a flashy to them. Models sashayed on ramp in floor touching coats made of chenille and silk with gold leaves embossed on them. The separates were amazing in their own respect.

Bal incorporated in his line lot of transparent kurtis with plunging necklines and V-cuts blouses with puffed sleeves that made the models look quite elegant and sophisticated.

But, are such creations wearable? Who is the designer catering to? “I am not aiming to impress anyone. I make clothes that I want to make. I am not making it for the buyers either. That’s my style,” says the designer blatantly.

Male models walked the ramp flaunting long trench blazers over lungis and dhotis.

Colour palette comprised of mellowed down tones like ivory, gray, navy blue, black and deep red. According to Rohit, nude colours would rule the season.

Also, one could easily spot neat finished cuts to the creations. Silhouettes were neither prêt nor couture; one could term it as diffusion.

So, what was the special about this year’s collection? "I think the varak (golden work) that I used on my jackets and skirts was very unique more so because the gold leaves used were hundred per cent original,” says Bal.

In one line, Bal’s autumn line for fashion week was royal, flamboyant and jarring to the core.
