GUIDING LIGHT|Do we really care

The people for whom reservation is being voiced for, express the view that ability should not be sidelined, writes Seema Sharma.

‘It has been debated over and over and each time it takes its toll, cost of precious human lives, everyone talks very passionately about it, every sensible person is afraid of its sequelae if not handled well, it impacts all of us’. It is a riddle and if answered correctly it will be read as ‘reservation in education and jobs’.

All well meaning people even belonging to the classes, for which reservation is being voiced for, express the view that ability should not be sidelined. As caste is no license to be wise I have met intellectuals belonging to the so called ‘backward class’ talking sense and justice wisely.

It is only when the matters become political and things are to be said publicly that people change statements and speak things politically nuanced. Wisdom requires ‘Abhay-dan’. No one wishes to be seen alone especially if one is trying to speak the truth. We all remember Socrates.

Another truth which we should never let go is that if we are apprehensive about things, things will never work at their best. Apprehensions are to be eradicated.

If we wish quality to survive at all levels of society, then all levels of society must come forward with sense and sensibility on the issue. If the issue is poorly handled, all will lose, some now and some later. There is no winning on the issue.
