Guillermo Coria, the world number three, has pulled out of the Olympic Games because of a right shoulder injury. He has tendinitis, and tests indicated he would not recover in time for the Games.
The 22 year old Argentine will be replaced in the Olympic team by Mariano Zabaleta who won the recent tournament in Baastad, Sweden.
Coria was the runner-up to compatriot Gaston Gaudio at the French Open in June. He is the first player in the open era to lose in the French Open final after holding a match point.
He went on to win the Monte Carlo Masters for his 26th straight win on clay and seventh career title on the surface. He became the first Argentine to reach the final at the Nasdaq-100 Open, in Miami but he is yet to win a hard court title.
Argentina has not won an Olympic gold in tennis since the 1952 Helsinki Games, but at the 1992 Barcelona Games doubles pair Javier Frana and Christian Miniussi won a surprise bronze.
