The Gujarat government on Wednesday appointed a judicial commission to inquire into allegations of corruption and favours done by some departments to top industrial houses.
"The commission will look into the allegations about corruption made by the opposition party (Congress) in its memorandum submitted to the President of India. The commission will submit its report by March 31, 2012," the state government release said.
Justice MB Shah, a retired judge of the Supreme Court, will head the commission."There are 17 points in the memorandum submitted by the Congress. All those points shall be inquired to find out whether any irregularity was committed by the state authorities," Gujarat government spokesperson Jaynarayan Vyas said.
The government's announcement came a few hours after a petition seeking the appointment of the Lokayukta in the state was filed in the Gujarat high court by Bhikhabhai Jethva, father of the late RTI activist Amit Jethva, who was murdered last year.
The petition will come up for hearing on Thursday. The state is doing without the lokayukta for seven years.

{{/usCountry}}Assembly leader of opposition Shaktisinh Gohil called the formation of the commission an attempt to delay the appointment of the lokayukta in the state.
"Why is the chief minister sitting on the file regarding the appointment of the lokayukta for seven years?" he asked.
