Gujarat’s IPS officer Rahul Sharma, who had taken on the Narendra Modi administration over the 2002 riots, has sought voluntary retirement from the services citing “personal reasons.”
The 1992 batch IPS officer of Gujarat cadre Sharma had prepared two CDs of call records that exposed many BJP, VHP and Bajarang Dal leaders, who were involved in the anti-minority riots in 2002.
Sharma had also assisted the Ahmedabad police in investigations in high profile riots cases like Gulbarg Soceity massacre and Naroda Patiya massacre.
The then Modi government had initiated an inquiry against him that is still pending.
Meanwhile, he maintained that he resigned from the service for “personal reasons” and not because of any inquiry or any action of the Gujarat government.
He is currently posted as deputy inspector general (DIG) of armed units in Vadodara.
Recently, he had urged the state government to post him in Gandhinagar or Ahmedabad because his wife passed away and his son was studying in Gandhinagar.
