District government counsel Ashok Nigam, informed the court that on January 11, preparations were on for the KGMU convocation ceremony at the Convention Centre, when a medico, Dr Deepak Agrawal, due to his own negligence, fell into a pit and suffered injuries. He died later despite the best treatment available.

Nigam said it was just after the death that Dr Gupta and Dr Singh, incited hundreds of students to commit arson on the campus. The building of the Dental College and administrative block were set afire, causing a loss of Rs 6 lakh. The damage to the administrative block was worth Rs 60 lakh. Valuable documents and other records were also reduced to ashes.

The defense counsel, on the other hand, submitted that there was no evidence that was reliable against Dr Gupta, who was not named in the FIR. The evidence collected later, were fabricated at the instance of Professor Ashok Sahai of department of Anatomy.

The hearing for bail application of controversial medico Dr KK Singh is fixed for hearing on February 18 but observations made in the rejection order of Dr Gupta also sealed his fate. The judge observed, “evidence has come that it was KK Singh who was head of the mob and the applicant was also part of the mob and all these persons incited students to put the property on fire. It was a very serious offence.”
